Description

Belogradcik Overview

Belogradchik has been known as a settlement from early Roman times and has survived during the entire Bulgarian history. Located in the skirt of the Balkan Mountains just 50 km south of the Danube River, close to the border with Serbia to the west. Its name literally means “small white town”. The most impressive sightseeing area are the unique rock formations knows as the Belogradchik Rocks over an area of 90 square kilometers with some of them reaching 200 meters in height which were nominated for new Seven Wonders of The World. In between these rocks is the medieval fortress which is standing guard until today.

Your Day In Belogradcik

After we leave from Sofia we head to the North- West and will drive for around 3 hours through a mountain pass called Petrohan and will be able to enjoy amazing views en route. We usually arrive at the Fortress around 11:30 and will head to the top of the hill. You will hear more about the history of the place together with frightening stories about rebels and prisoners and will have the chance to test your imagination in trying to see the different shapes among the rocks (the Maddona, The Rabbit, the Turtle, the Ice- Age Squirrel, the Rebel and many more). Back at the parking lot you can get a local souvenir or try some wine or rakia from the Magura Cave wine cellar.

A short drive takes you to nearby newly-opened cave Venetsa (the Wreath), small in size but absolutely impressive and with amazing natural formations.Wind-down in a nearby welcoming restaurant before you set off back to Sofia. Please note that the drive to Belogradchik is fairly long and mostly mountainous and with more turns on the way to Belogradcik.

Then you will have the chance to try some local specialties in a restaurant nearby (optional, not included in the price). The return to Sofia is around 18:30h.
