Plovdiv overview

Plovdiv has existed as a settlement for 8000 years becoming a town during the Troyan war around 3000 years ago. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe and is dated back to the same times as Troya and Mikena. For a short period of time in the 4th century BC it was ruled by the Macedonians and named Philippopolis after the father of Alexander the Great- Phillip II. When the First Bulgarian State was established in 681 the city became an important fortress of the Byzantine Empire. It was conquered by the Turks in 1364 and the city started to be known as Filibe.

The Old town of Plovdiv holds well preserved richly decorated 19th century houses, remains from the ancient fortress wall and some of the largest Roman remains like the Theater and the Stadium. All of the above together with cobblestone streets, beautiful churches and numerous museums make Plovdiv The European Capital of Culture in 2019 an must see destination from Sofia!
