Bulgaria before & now

Bulgaria is a country located in South Western Europe on the Balkan Peninsula, official member of the European Union since 2007 and on the map for over 1300 years which is making it one of the oldest states on the continent.

Traces of life in these lands have been dated back to 1.5 million years and there are thousands of archaeological discoveries following from many different civilizations who have inhabited Bulgaria’s lands. The most significant ones are the treasures left by the Thracians in the numerous tombs all over the territory of the country. There is a trace of the culture of the Ancient Greeks who started establishing their colonies on the Black Sea coast since 7^th century BC. Being part of the Roman Empire later, the country has a lot of significant Roman sites to be visited especially the Roman Thermea in Varna, The Antique Theater and Stadium in Plovdiv and many more. Thanks to a union between the Slav tribes who settled on the Peninsula around 5-6 th Ad and the Proto- Bulgarians coming from the East, the First Bulgarian State was established in 681. The historical sites from the first and second Bulgarian State include old fortresses, beautifully decorated old churches and monasteries, some of them declared Monuments of Unesco’s World Heritage.

One of the main reasons to visit Bulgaria apart from the historical sites and one of the biggest treasures of the country is the amazing nature with four well defined seasons offering perfect conditions for all types of tourism. Numerous mountains holding amazing shapes done in the rocks by wind and water, picturesque waterfalls and breathtaking views. Vast plains with fields of grains, fruit gardens and vineyards. Hundreds of mineral springs where you can find Bulgaria’s Spa and Balneological resorts, dozens of seaside resorts for a nice summer holiday and several ski resorts offering perfect conditions for beginners, intermediate and advances skiers and boarders. The Bulgarian rivers and lakes offer great conditions for kayaking and white water rafting.

While in the country you will have the opportunity to try Bulgarian wines with some of the oldest traditions of wine making in the world and also the traditional food which is using a lot of herbs and spices, fresh fruits and vegetables and amazing dairy products. You will be able to enjoy the big variety of Bulgarian music and dances and go deep into the country’s traditions and festivals.

Be careful as usual for pick-pocketing in crowded areas. The general crime factor is not high, but you should be careful.
